Trading Pokémon from Game Boy to DS Emulator: Official Bank Method vs. PKHeX Workaround

Direct trading between a Game Boy emulator and a DS emulator is impossible. They emulate different architectures (GB Z80 vs DS ARM7/9) with no link cable emulation bridge.

Official Path (Requires 3DS Hardware)

  1. Dump GB/GBC/GBA saves to PC (GBxCart RW, or 3DS CFW + Checkpoint).
  2. Inject into VC/Injection: Convert to 3DS Virtual Console injects (.cia) for Gen 1/2, or use PKHeX to move .pk2/.pk3 → Gen 5 format.
  3. Poké Transporter (3DS eShop) → Moves Gen 5 (BW/B2W2) boxes → Pokémon Bank.
  4. Pokémon Bank → Pokémon Home (Switch/Mobile) → Gen 8/9 games.

Cost: Pokémon Bank (now free but requires prior download) + Poké Transporter (free) + 3DS CFW recommended.

Emulator-Only Workaround (Complex, Unreliable)

  • Use DeSmuME (DS) + mGBA/SameBoy (GB) with Net Link / Link Cable Emulation via TCP/IP (experimental, desyncs often).
  • Trade via PKHeX: Edit save files directly—extract .pk2 from GB save, convert to .pk4/.pk5, inject into DS save. No link cable simulation needed.

Recommendation

Use PKHeX on PC: Open GB save → View Pokémon → Export .pk2 → Open DS save (Gen 4/5) → Import → Set Met Data (Pal Park / PokeTransfer) → Save. Clean, instant, no emulation linking headaches.
