Buying an NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) in Ottawa

Finding a brand-new NES in Ottawa is impossible (discontinued 1995). For a working used console, try these local and online sources:

Local Ottawa Stores (Call Ahead)

  • Retro Game Specialists: Level One Game Shop (Bank St), The Game Shack (multiple locations), Retro Games Ottawa (online/local pickup). Best for tested/refurbished units with warranties.
  • Pawn Shops / Consignment: Cash Converters, Money Mart locations. Hit or miss, but sometimes cheap.
  • Thrift Stores: Value Village, Salvation Army, Goodwill. Rare, but possible. Check electronics bins.

Online Marketplaces (Filter for Ottawa/Local Pickup)

  • Facebook Marketplace: Most active local community. Search "NES", "Nintendo Entertainment System".
  • Kijiji: Strong in Ottawa. Filter by "Video Games & Consoles".
  • eBay.ca: Filter "Item Location: Canada" + "Free Local Pickup" for Ottawa sellers.

Buying Checklist

  • Complete Kit: Console, AC Adapter (NES-001), RF Switch or AV Cable, Controller(s).
  • Condition: Test if possible. Look for bent cartridge pins (blinking red light), yellowing, cracked casing.
  • Price Check: Loose console: $50-$80 CAD. Complete/Refurbished: $100-$180+. Boxed: $200+.
  • Modern Alternative: Consider an Analogue Pocket (FPGA, plays carts via adapter) or RetroN 5 (emulation) for HDMI output and save states.
