Buying French DS Games on eBay for US Consoles: Region Lock Explained

French (PAL) DS games will NOT work on a US (NTSC-U/C) Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, or 3DS. Region locking is enforced by the hardware, and understanding the label codes is essential before you bid.

Region Codes on Cart Labels

NTR-XXXX-EUR / PALEurope, AU, NZEU, AU, NZ DS/DSi/3DS

NTR-XXXX-KOR / NTSC-KKoreaKR DSi/3DS only (region-locked)

What "NTSC" and "PAL" Actually Mean

NTSC (National Television System Committee) refers to the analog TV standard (480i/60 Hz) used as shorthand for the Americas/Japan region. PAL (Phase Alternating Line) is the European/Oceania standard (576i/50 Hz). On DS/3DS, these terms denote the region-locking scheme, not video output.

eBay Buying Checklist

  1. Search "NTSC-U/C" or "USA version" + game title.
  2. Verify the cart label in photos shows USA or NTR-XXXX-USA.
  3. Ask the seller: "Is this the North American (NTSC-U/C) version?"
  4. Avoid "Region Free" claims—DS/DSi/3DS hardware enforces region; only original DS Phat/Lite can run a flashcart that bypasses it (not retail carts).

French cart = PAL = no boot on US hardware. Buy the USA version.
