Playing Games on Nintendo DSi: SD Card vs. Cartridges Explained

You cannot play games directly from an SD card on DSi. The SD slot is only for storage, not game execution.

How DSi Games Work

  • Physical Cartridges: Insert into top slot (DS/DSi/3DS games). Primary way to play.
  • DSiWare (Digital): Buy/download from DSi Shop (closed 2017) → stored on System Memory or SD Card → launched from System Menu.

What SD Card Stores

  • DSiWare games/apps (moved from System Memory)
  • Photos (DSi Camera)
  • Audio (DSi Sound)
  • Not: DS/3DS game cartridges, saves (stored on cart), or homebrew (requires hack)

If You Want to Play Games from SD

  • Homebrew (Hack Required): Install TWiLight Menu++ via dsi.cfw.guide. Allows launching .nds ROMs from SD. Legal only for games you own.
  • Flashcart (Old Method): R4, Acekard, etc. in cartridge slot—loads ROMs from microSD. Legality varies; often used for piracy.

Official Path Only

  1. Buy physical DS/3DS cartridges.
  2. Or buy a 3DS/2DS—access to 3DS eShop (still open) for digital 3DS/DS games.

DSi Shop is dead. For digital library, get a 3DS/2DS. For cartridge games, any DS/3DS/2DS works.
