Why the Game Boy Advance Slot Was Removed: DS Lite, Not DSi

Correction: The Nintendo DS Lite (2006) removed the GBA slot. The Nintendo DSi (2008/2009) never had one.

DS Lite (2006) – Why GBA Slot Removed

  • Slimmer Design: 21.8mm → 13.9mm thickness. GBA slot + cartridge height prevented thinness.
  • Focus on DS Library: By 2006, DS had huge library. GBA backward compatibility less critical.
  • Cost Reduction: Removing slot, circuitry, and mechanical parts lowered BOM.
  • Battery Life: Smaller battery possible; GBA mode drew more power.
  • Market Shift: GBA sales ended 2006. Developers moved to DS.

DSi (2008/2009) – Further Changes

  • No GBA slot (already gone since Lite).
  • Added: Cameras, SD slot, DSiWare shop, better CPU, larger screens.
  • Removed: GBA slot (obviously), GBA compatibility entirely.

Playing GBA Games After DS Lite

  • Original DS / DS Lite: Only hardware with native GBA support.
  • 3DS / 2DS: No GBA slot. Virtual Console (eShop, closed 2023) had ~10 GBA titles (Ambassador Program).
  • Wii U Virtual Console: Had GBA games (eShop closed 2023).
  • Modern: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack includes GBA games (Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, etc.). Best legal way today.

The DS Lite dropped GBA for slimness. DSi continued that. Switch Online + Expansion Pack now brings GBA back legally.
