Nintendo DS Hardware Evolution: DS → DS Lite → DSi → DSi XL → 3DS

The original DS hardware changed minimally; evolution came via model revisions:

Model Timeline & Changes

  1. DS (2004): Dual screens (touch + LCD), Wi-Fi, microphone, GBA slot, MicroSD (homebrew only).
  2. DS Lite (2006): 42% smaller, brighter screens (4-level), better stylus, improved hinge, longer battery.
  3. DSi (2008): Dual 0.3MP cameras, SD slot, 256 MB NAND, DSi Shop (DSiWare), faster CPU (133 MHz), stereo sound, no GBA slot, browser, photo/music apps.
  4. DSi XL (2009): 4.2" screens (93% larger), better viewing angles, longer battery, same features as DSi.
  5. 3DS (2011): New platform—autostereoscopic 3D, Circle Pad, motion/gyro, StreetPass/SpotPass, virtual console, significantly more powerful.

Software Evolution

While hardware plateaued at DSi XL, the software library exploded: brain training, RPGs, platformers, DSiWare digital titles, and robust online (WFC) until 2014 shutdown (revived via Wiimmfi).
