Nintendo DS Lite Materials: ABS Plastic, Metal Hinges, Tempered Glass & Silicon

The Nintendo DS Lite (model USG-001) is constructed from the following primary materials:

External Housing

  • ABS Plastic (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): Main shell (top/bottom halves), battery cover, stylus slot cover. High impact resistance, good surface finish, moldable. Colorants molded in (white, black, cobalt, crimson, pink, etc.).
  • Polycarbonate (PC) Blend: Some translucent parts (power LED window, hinge covers) may use PC or PC/ABS blend for clarity/toughness.

Structural / Mechanical

  • Stainless Steel / Spring Steel: **Hinge mechanism** (clamshell pivot). High cycle fatigue resistance. Critical for "clamshell feel."
  • Phosphor Bronze / Beryllium Copper: Cartridge slot contacts, GBA slot contacts, battery terminals. Springiness, conductivity, corrosion resistance.
  • Zinc Alloy (Zamak) / Aluminum: Internal shielding frames, screw bosses, hinge mounting brackets.

Displays

  • Tempered Glass (Chemically Strengthened): Top and bottom screen cover lenses. Scratch/impact resistant. Not Gorilla Glass (pre-2007).
  • LCD Panels: 3.12" TFT (256×192 each). Top: transmissive. Bottom: transflective + resistive touchscreen layer (ITO-coated PET/glass).

Electronics (Internal)

  • Silicon (Monocrystalline): CPU (ARM9 + ARM7), GPU, RAM (4MB PSRAM + 656KB VRAM), NAND Flash, Wi-Fi chip, PMIC.
  • Copper: PCB traces (multi-layer FR4), wire bonds, shielding cans.
  • Gold: Contact plating (cartridge edge, test pads).
  • Lithium-Ion Polymer: Battery (USG-003, 1000 mAh, 3.7V).

Finishes

  • UV-Cured Paint / Hard Coat: Glossy exterior finish (prone to hairline scratches).
  • Pad Printing / Laser Etching: Button labels, regulatory logos.
  • Rubberized Feet: TPE/TPU on bottom shell.

This material mix balances durability (hinge cycles >100k), weight (218g), cost, and RF transparency for Wi-Fi.
