Fix: Nintendo DS Won't Read Game Cards

Quick Fixes (Try First)

  1. Clean Contacts: 99% Isopropyl alcohol + lint-free cloth / cotton swab on game card gold pins. Dry fully.
  2. Blow Out Slot: Compressed air (upright!) into DS card slot. No saliva.
  3. Test Another Game: Isolate: one cart fails = dirty/damaged cart. All fail = console slot.
  4. Hard Reset: Hold POWER 10s → release → power on.

Deeper Fixes

  • Bent Pins in Slot: Shine light in slot. If pins visibly bent, stop. Requires microsoldering / slot replacement.
  • Corroded Slot: White/green crust = liquid damage. Clean with IPA + soft brush. May need ultrasonic board clean.
  • Spring Mechanism: Card doesn't "click" eject? Spring detached. Slot replacement needed.
  • Firmware: None user-updatable for card reading. Flashcart kernel updates (if using flashcart) differ.

Model-Specific Notes

  • DS Phat / Lite: Slot 1 (DS) + Slot 2 (GBA). Both fail = mainboard issue.
  • DSi / XL: Slot 1 only. No GBA slot. Camera apps unrelated.
  • 3DS / 2DS: Same slot. Backward compat. Check 3DS carts too.

When to Pro Repair / Replace

If cleaning + multiple known-good games fail → Slot 1 reader module replacement ($15 part, moderate solder) or mainboard. eBay "for parts" donor console often cheaper. Backup saves via homebrew (GodMode9) first if possible.
