How to Record Nintendo DS/3DS Gameplay: Methods from Capture Cards to Phones

"DS" usually means Nintendo DS/DSi/3DS family. Recording requires external hardware—the DS has no built-in capture or video output.

Methods (Best to Worst Quality)

  1. Capture Card (Hardmod): Install internal capture board (e.g., Loopy, Merki for DS/DSi; 3DS Capture Board for 3DS). Outputs clean HDMI/USB. Best quality. Requires soldering/professional install ($150–300+).
  2. Camera / Phone Recording: Point at screens. Use tripod, good lighting, 60 fps. Zero cost, lowest quality.
  3. Emulator on PC (If You Own the Game): DeSmuME (DS), melonDS (DS), Citra (3DS). Record via OBS. Legal only with dumped ROM/BIOS from your hardware.
  4. DSi/3DS "Screenshot" Feature: Only stills (L+R+Start on DSi, Home menu on 3DS). No video.

What You Need for Capture Card

  • Compatible console (original DS/DSi/3DS models vary—check compatibility).
  • Capture board kit or pre-modded console (eBay, specialized sellers like Merki, Loopy).
  • PC + capture software (OBS, AmarecTV).

Clarify which DS model and budget for a tailored recommendation.
