Nintendo DS Clock: How It Works & How to Fix Wrong Time

DS Clock Is Automatic

The Nintendo DS (Phat/Lite) has a built-in **Real-Time Clock (RTC)** powered by a **coin-cell battery (CR2032)** on the motherboard. It keeps time even when the system is off.

First Boot / Battery Replacement

On first power-on (or after RTC battery death), the DS prompts you to set date/time. Once set, it updates automatically.

No Manual “Clock On/Off” Setting

There is no menu toggle to enable/disable the clock. If time is wrong:

  1. **System Settings → Date & Time → Set correctly.**
  2. **If it resets on every power loss**, the RTC battery is dead.

RTC Battery Replacement

  • Original DS (Phat): Battery holder on motherboard – easy swap (tri-wing Y0 screwdriver).
  • DS Lite / DSi / DSi XL: Battery **soldered** to motherboard – requires soldering iron + skill. Many repair shops do this for $20–$40.
  • 3DS Family: Battery in removable compartment (easy).

Note: The DS **does not sync time via internet** (unlike 3DS/Switch). Manual set is the only way.
