How to Insert a Nintendo DS Game Card: Legitimate Play Only

Playing Nintendo DS games requires a legitimate game card. Downloading ROMs of games you don't own is copyright infringement. Below is the correct way to use physical cartridges you've purchased.

Inserting a DS Game Card

  1. Power Off the console completely (hold Power until shutdown).
  2. Orient the Card: Label side facing away from the screen (toward the back of the console). Contacts (gold edge) face down.
  3. Insert Firmly into Slot 1 (the top/front slot on DS/DS Lite/DSi; the only slot on 3DS family). Push until you feel a click—the card is spring-loaded and will sit flush.
  4. Power On: The game icon appears on the main menu. Tap to launch.

Playing Legally Acquired Digital Versions

  • DSi / 3DS / 2DS: The Nintendo eShop for these systems closed March 27, 2023. You can no longer purchase new digital DS/DSiWare titles. Previously purchased games remain in your "Redownloadable Software" list.
  • Wii U Virtual Console: Select DS titles were sold digitally; also delisted but redownloadable if owned.

Homebrew & Emulation (Legal Context)

  • Emulators (melonDS, DeSmuME, DraStic) are legal software.
  • ROMs are legal only if you dump them from your own cartridges using a hardware dumper (e.g., NTRBoot + GodMode9 on 3DS, or Retrode/GB Operator on PC).
  • Downloading ROMs from the internet—even for games you own—is unauthorized distribution.

Buying Physical Games Today

  • Reputable retailers: eBay, Mercari, PriceCharting, local game stores, Lukie Games, DKOldies.
  • Verify authenticity: Check label print quality, PCB markings (Nintendo logo, "CIC" code), and seller ratings.

Enjoy the vast DS library the way it was meant to be played—on real hardware, with real cartridges.
