Adding Music to Nintendo DSi Legally (No LimeWire)

LimeWire was a peer-to-peer file-sharing client notorious for copyright infringement and malware. Do not use it. Downloading copyrighted music without permission is illegal, and P2P networks are primary vectors for trojans and ransomware.

Legal Ways to Get Music on DSi

  1. DSi Sound (Built-in): Records short clips via the microphone. Fun for memos, not full songs.
  2. DSiWare Music Apps (DSi Shop - Discontinued): The shop closed in 2017. If you bought apps previously, redownload via "Settings → Data Management → DSiWare."
  3. Convert Your Own CDs / Legal Downloads:
    1. Rip CDs or use purchased DRM-free files (MP3, AAC, M4A).
    2. Convert to AAC (.m4a) at 128–256 kbps using iTunes, Music.app, or free tools (Freemake, VLC, ffmpeg).
    3. Copy to SD:/music/ on an SD card.
    4. Insert SD card → DSi Sound → "Play with your music" → Import from SD Card.

Why This Matters

  • Copyright: Artists deserve compensation. Legal sources (Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon Music, CD rips) support them.
  • Security: Clean files = no bricked handheld.
  • Compatibility: DSi only plays AAC/MP4 audio from SD. MP3 support is flaky; convert to M4A for reliability.

Enjoy your personal library legally and safely.
