Can Nintendo 3DS and DS Chat or Play Together Online?

Short answer: No direct chat or cross-platform online play exists between Nintendo DS and 3DS.

Why They Can't Communicate Directly

  • Different Architectures: DS (ARM9/ARM7) vs. 3DS (ARM11) – incompatible network stacks.
  • Separate Friend Systems: DS used Friend Codes per-game; 3DS uses a system-wide Friend Code + Nintendo Network ID (NNID).
  • Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Shutdown: The DS online service (used by games like Mario Kart DS, Pokémon Diamond/Pearl) was discontinued May 20, 2014. 3DS online services (except Pokémon Bank/Transporter) ended April 8, 2024.

What Still Works: Local Wireless

Certain games support local wireless (ad-hoc) between DS and 3DS family systems because the 3DS includes a DS-mode wireless radio:

  • Pokémon Gen IV → Gen V Transfer: DS game (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HG/SS) → 3DS game (Black/White/B2/W2) via "Poké Transfer Lab" (local wireless).
  • Download Play: Some DS titles allow 3DS users to join via Download Play (single-card multiplayer).
  • Cross-Gen Titles: A few games like Clubhouse Games support DS/3DS local play.

Modern Alternatives for Communication

  • Discord / WhatsApp / Messenger: Use smartphones for voice/text chat while playing.
  • Nintendo Switch Online App: Voice chat for Switch games (not DS/3DS).
  • Pretendo Network (Homebrew): Community-run replacement for 3DS/Wii U online. Supports friend lists, Miiverse, some game servers. Requires custom firmware.
  • Wiimmfi (Homebrew): Restores Mario Kart DS/Wii, Animal Crossing: Wild World, and other DS/Wii online play. Requires DS homebrew or Wii mod.

Bottom Line

For chatting: Use a phone app. For playing DS games online today: Wiimmfi (DS) or Pretendo (3DS) via homebrew. Official services are permanently discontinued.
