Can You Put a DS Game in a 3DS? No—But You Can Play Them

Physically: No. DS cartridges are thicker (3.3 mm) and have a different pinout/notch than 3DS cards (2.0 mm). A DS cart will not fit in a 3DS slot — do not force it.

How to Play DS Games on 3DS

  1. Backward Compatibility (Native): The 3DS has a second CPU (ARM9) and DS-mode hardware. Insert a DS game card into the front slot (same slot — 3DS cards are thinner but keyed differently). Wait — correction: The 3DS cartridge slot accepts both 3DS and DS cards. DS cards click in deeper. Yes, DS games work natively on 3DS/2DS/New 3DS.
  2. DSi Mode: DSi-enhanced / DSi-exclusive games (camera, shop) run in DSi mode on 3DS. Region-locked (unlike DS games which are region-free on DS/DSi).
  3. Virtual Console (eShop - Closed March 2023): Select DS titles sold digitally (Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Dr. Kawashima, WarioWare Touched). No longer purchasable.

Limitations on 3DS

  • Resolution Scaling: DS 256×192 → 3DS 400×240 (top). Blurry bilinear stretch. Hold Start + Select at boot for native resolution (1:1) with black borders.
  • No GBA Slot: Cannot transfer from GBA carts (Pal Park, Pokéwalker, Guitar Hero grip).
  • No Local Wireless Multiplayer (DS Download Play): 3DS cannot host DS Download Play for other DS/3DS units. Correction: 3DS can host DS Download Play for other DS/3DS systems.
  • Sleep Mode: Closing lid suspends DS game (unlike DS/DSi where it's instant).

Best Experience

Original DS/DSi Lite for authentic screen ratio, GBA slot, longer battery. 3DS fine for single-player with native-res boot combo.
