What Was DSiWare? Nintendo's First Handheld Digital Shop Explained

DSiWare was Nintendo's first dedicated digital distribution service for a handheld, launching with the **Nintendo DSi in November 2008** (Japan) / April 2009 (West). It ran on DSi and DSi XL only (not original DS/DS Lite).

Key Features

  • Direct download: Games/apps saved to internal memory (256 MB) or SD Card.
  • Currency: **Nintendo DSi Points** (purchased via credit card or Points cards). 1000 Pts = $10 / €10 / £9 / ¥1000.
  • Price range: 200–1000 Points ($2–$10). Many "Apps" (clocks, calculators) were free or 200 Pts.
  • Exclusive content: Titles like Art Style series, WarioWare: Snapped! (camera), Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, Shantae: Risky's Revenge (launch exclusive), Cave Story, Dark Void Zero.
  • DSi-exclusive features: Camera integration, microphone use, larger save files.

Legacy & Closure

The **DSi Shop closed March 31, 2017.** Purchases are no longer possible. However:

  • Owned games remain playable on the original DSi/3DS they were bought on.
  • System Transfer allows moving licenses to a 3DS family system (one-time, irreversible).
  • Many hits were later ported to 3DS eShop (Shantae, Cave Story, Mighty Flip Champs, Art Style games) or Switch (Shantae, G.G Series).

DSiWare paved the way for the 3DS eShop and Nintendo Switch eShop.
