Can You Play Nintendo DS Games on a Nintendo 3DS? Yes—Full Backward Compatibility
Yes. The Nintendo 3DS (all models: 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 2DS XL) is fully backward compatible with Nintendo DS game cartridges.
How It Works
Insert the DS game card into the **3DS Game Card slot** (same physical size).
The 3DS boots into **TWL_FIRM** mode, downclocking its CPU/GPU to mimic DS hardware.
Top screen displays the game (pillarboxed 4:3 or stretched via Start + Select at boot). Bottom screen = touchscreen.
Limitations
No GBA Slot: DS games requiring the GBA slot (e.g., Guitar Hero: On Tour grip, Pokémon Pal Park migration, Rumble Pak) **do not work** on 3DS (except via homebrew/flashcart).
Local Wireless (Download Play): 3DS **cannot** link locally with a DS/DSi for multiplayer (different protocol). Use Wiimmfi/online or two 3DS systems.
DSi-Enhanced/Exclusive Games: Work fine (camera features use 3DS cameras).
Video Output: No native TV out. Capture requires a hardware mod or PC streaming via homebrew (NTR CFW, boot9strap).
Visual Options (Hold Start+Select at Boot)
Default: 256x192 per screen, centered with black borders (sharpest).
Stretched: Fills 400x240 top / 320x240 bottom. Blurry.
DS games run natively—no emulation lag. It's the best way to play them today.
