DS vs. DSi Game Compatibility – They Are Not Interchangeable

Nintendo DS and DSi games are not compatible with each other's hardware.

Why

• Different Cartridge Slots: DS uses Game Boy Advance-sized slot; DSi uses smaller DSi-only slot (though DSi plays DS cards).
• Hardware Differences: DSi has upgraded CPU, RAM, cameras, and SD slot—DSi-enhanced/exclusive games require these.
• Firmware/OS: DSi runs a different system menu with Shop, Camera, Sound apps.

What Works

• DS games → DSi/DSi XL/3DS/2DS: ✅ Fully playable (except GBA-slot accessories).
• DSi-enhanced games (hybrid): Play on DS in DS mode; unlock DSi features on DSi/3DS.
• DSi-exclusive games (white cartridge): ❌ Only on DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, 2DS.
• DSi games → Original DS/DS Lite: ❌ Will not boot.

Check the cartridge color: Dark gray = DS (works on all). White = DSi-exclusive (DSi/3DS family only).
