Nintendo DSi SD Card Limit: 2 GB Max (Standard SD)

Nintendo DSi / DSi XL only support standard SD cards up to 2 GB. SDHC (4 GB–32 GB) and SDXC (64 GB+) are not recognized.

Technical Reason

• DSi firmware lacks SDHC driver (FAT32 + sector addressing >2 GB)
• Hardware controller only addresses 2 GB block space
• No firmware update added support—DSi EOL before SDHC mainstream

Practical Notes

• Usable space: ~1.8 GB (system reserves ~200 MB)
• DSiWare: 1–50 MB per title—2 GB holds dozens
• Photos/Music: AAC/MP3, JPG—Limited by 2 GB anyway
• Brand: SanDisk, Kingston, Samsung standard SD (not SDHC)—Reliable

3DS Difference

Nintendo 3DS / 2DS / New 3DS support SDHC up to 32 GB (officially), 64–128 GB (unofficially, FAT32 formatted). DSi does not.

Buy 2 GB standard SD. They're cheap ($5–10) and the hard limit.
