Pokémon Stadium 2 (N64) “No Signal” Fix: Cartridge & Console Troubleshooting

If your cleaned Pokémon Stadium 2 cart shows “no signal” on a working N64/TV setup, the issue is almost certainly cartridge-to-console contact failure. Follow this diagnostic ladder:

1. Deep Cartridge Contact Cleaning (Most Likely Fix)

  • Use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol + lint-free cloth (coffee filter, microfiber) on the gold edge contacts. Rub firmly.
  • Do not use erasers (abrasive), Brasso (removes gold plating), or compressed air alone (pushes debris in).
  • Let dry 2 minutes.

2. Inspect Cartridge Pins

  • Shine a light into the cart slot. Look for bent, recessed, or corroded pins.
  • If bent: Do not force straight. Take to a retro repair shop (micro-soldering needed).

3. Clean N64 Cartridge Slot

  • Wrap a credit card in microfiber, dampen with alcohol, insert/remove repeatedly to scrub slot pins.
  • Or use a dedicated N64 cleaning cart (if available).

4. Test Isolation

  • Other games work? → Cartridge fault (contacts, PCB trace crack, dead save battery).
  • No games work? → Console slot fault (bent pins, cracked solder on connector, dead CIC lockout chip).
  • Cart works in another N64? → Your console slot is the issue.

5. Save Battery / Corrosion

  • Stadium 2 uses a CR2032 save battery. If leaked, green/white corrosion on PCB kills the cart. Open cart (3.8mm gamebit), inspect PCB. Replace battery + clean corrosion with vinegar/alcohol if minor.

6. TV/Input Check

  • Verify TV is on correct AV/Composite/HDMI (via converter) input.
  • Try RF switch (Ch 3/4) if composite fails — rules out TV input jack.

90% fix rate: Deep alcohol clean on cart + slot. If persistent, it’s hardware (slot pins or cart PCB) needing pro repair.
