Game Boy Color Games on Original Nintendo DS: Not Compatible

Original DS (Phat) and DS Lite cannot play Game Boy Color cartridges.

Hardware Reasons

  • Slot-1: DS cards only (notched differently).
  • Slot-2 (GBA): Accepts GBA carts only — voltage (3.3V) and bus incompatible with GB/GBC (5V).
  • No Z80 Coprocessor: GBA has it for GB/GBC backward compat; DS removed it to save cost/space.
