Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Connection Troubleshooting (WFC / Local)
Nintendo DS Wi-Fi (Nintendo WFC) was officially shut down May 20, 2014. Official online matchmaking, leaderboards, and Friend Code servers are dead.
What Still Works
Local Wireless (Ad-Hoc): DS-to-DS, DS-to-Wii, Download Play (Single Cart Multiplayer) – works forever, no internet needed. Range ~30ft.
Homebrew Revival (AltWFC / Wiimmfi): Custom DNS (164.132.44.106 / 95.217.77.151) restores online for supported games (Mario Kart DS, Pokémon Gen 4/5, Animal Crossing WW, etc.). Requires:
Flashcart (R4, Ace3DS+, DSTWO) + Wood/R4iMenu kernel, OR
DSi/3DS with Unlaunch / HiyaCFW / TWiLight Menu++ (no cart needed).
Troubleshooting Local / AltWFC
Router: 2.4 GHz only (DS supports 802.11b ONLY). Disable 5GHz. Security: WEP / Open / WPA-PSK (TKIP). WPA2-AES/CCMP often fails. Channel 1, 6, or 11.
DS Settings: System Settings → Internet → Connection Settings → Manual Setup → Enter SSID/Password → Auto IP/DNS (or AltWFC DNS).
Firewall/AP Isolation: Disable "AP Isolation" / "Client Isolation" on router for Local/AltWFC.
Game Compatibility: Check Wiimmfi.de/game for supported titles.
Common Errors
52000/52001: DNS/Server unreachable (WFC dead / Wrong DNS).
51300/51301: Auth failed (Wrong password / WPA2 not supported).
61020: No access point found (5GHz / Hidden SSID / Range).
For modern online DS play: Install TWiLight Menu++ on DSi/3DS + AltWFC DNS. Best experience.
