Downloading PlayStation Store Games to Memory Card: How It Works (PS4/PS5)

On PS4/PS5, games install to internal SSD by default. Extended storage (external USB SSD/HDD or internal M.2 NVMe on PS5) works as follows:

PS5 (M.2 NVMe Expansion)

  • Install games directly to M.2 (meets Sony specs: PCIe Gen4x4, heatsink).
  • Play directly from M.2—no transfer needed.
  • PS4 games also run from M.2.

PS4 / PS5 (External USB Drive)

  • PS4 Games: Can install/play directly from USB extended storage.
  • PS5 Games: Can store on USB, but must copy back to internal/M.2 SSD to play.
  • Saves/screenshots/captures → always on internal storage (cloud sync optional).

PS3/PS2/PS1 Classics

  • Download to internal HDD only. No extended storage support for legacy titles.

Memory Cards (Legacy)

PS1/PS2 memory cards (8 MB) only save game data—cannot store/execute games. PS Vita memory cards (proprietary) store full games.
