Pinochle Rules Summary (Partnership / Auction – Most Common)

Deck

48 cards: Two copies each of 9, 10, J, Q, K, A in all four suits (no 2–8).

Players

4 players in two partnerships (North/South vs East/West). 3-player "Cutthroat" and 2-player variants exist.

Deal

12 cards each (3 or 4 at a time). Remaining 12 form the kitty (Auction) or are not used (Partnership).

Bidding (Auction Pinochle)

• Players bid minimum 20 (or 25) points for the right to name trump and take the kitty.
• High bidder declares trump, adds kitty to hand, discards 12 cards (melds count from hand after discard).
• Partner of bidder passes 3–4 cards to bidder (optional house rule).

Melding (Scoring Combinations)

Note: Parentheses = common "10x" scoring scale. Confirm scale before playing.

Trick Play

• Bidder leads. Must follow suit if possible; else trump; else any.
• Highest trump wins; else highest card of led suit.
• Winner leads next trick.
• Counters: A=11, 10=10, K=4, Q=3, J=2, 9=0. Last trick = +10 (or +20).

Scoring

• Meld points + Trick points = Round score.
• If bidding team makes bid: both teams score their points.
• If bidding team fails (set): they score zero (or negative bid); opponents score their meld + tricks.
• Game to 1,000 (or 1,500) points.
