Where to Find Game Images Online (Legal Sources by Use Case)

Game images (screenshots, art, wallpapers, logos) have different licensing. Use the right source for your need.

Personal Use (Wallpapers, Reference, Non-Commercial)

  • Official Sites: playstation.com, xbox.com, nintendo.com, steamcommunity.com, ea.com, ubisoft.com — Press kits / media galleries.
  • Gaming Press: IGN, GameSpot, Polygon, Eurogamer, Kotaku — High-res screenshots in reviews (fair use for personal).
  • Image Search (Filter by License): Google Images → Tools → Usage Rights → “Creative Commons licenses” or “Commercial & other”.
  • Wallpaper Sites: Wallhaven.cc, InterfaceLIFT, Unsplash (search game title), Wallpaper Abyss.
  • Community: Reddit (r/GameWallpapers, r/), Steam Community Screenshots, Nexus Mods (screenshots tab).

Commercial / Marketing / Design Use (Requires License)

  • Stock Agencies: Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Getty Images, iStock — Search game title; filter “Editorial” vs “Commercial”. Expensive.
  • Publisher Press Kits: Request via press.[publisher].com or gamespress.com. Official assets with clear license.
  • Developer Direct: Indie devs often provide press kits on their site / presskit() page.
  • Creative Commons (CC BY / CC BY-SA): Wikimedia Commons, Flickr (filter license). **Verify game IP owner allows derivative use.** Most game art is **All Rights Reserved** — CC rare.

Critical Legal Notes

  • Game Assets Are Copyrighted: Screenshots, models, textures, UI, logos — owned by publisher/developer.
  • Fair Use (US) / Fair Dealing (UK/CA) Is Narrow: Criticism, review, news, parody, education. **Not** “I’m making a game/blog/store.”
  • Trademarks: Game titles, logos, character names are trademarked. Use requires permission.
  • Fan Art ≠ Free License: Artist owns copyright; IP owner owns underlying rights. Both must permit.

Best Practice

  1. Define use: Personal? Commercial? Editorial? Merch?
  2. Source from official press kit or stock agency with correct license.
  3. Keep license receipt / screenshot.
  4. Credit: “Image © [Publisher], used under [License].”

When in doubt, **create your own screenshot** from a game you own — safest for personal/content use.
