Buying a Game Boy Advance Today

Is the Game Boy Advance Still Sold New?

No. Nintendo discontinued the GBA line in 2008 (last model: Game Boy Micro). No retailer sells new units.

Where to Buy Used

  • eBay / Mercari / eBay: Largest selection; filter by condition, region, model (AGB-001, SP AGS-001/101, Micro).
  • Local Game Stores: Retro shops often stock cleaned/tested units.
  • Pawn Shops / Thrift Stores: Cheap but untested—buyer beware.
  • Facebook Marketplace / Craigslist / OfferUp: Local pickup, inspect before paying.

What to Check Before Buying

  • Screen: No dead pixels, scratches, backlight bleed (SP AGS-101 best).
  • Buttons: Responsive, not mushy.
  • Cartridge Slot: Reads games reliably.
  • Battery Cover: Present (SP/Micro).
  • Hinge (SP): Tight, not cracked.

Modern Alternative

Analogue Pocket (FPGA, plays GB/GBC/GBA carts, 1080p output) or modded GBA (IPS screen, rechargeable battery, USB-C).
