Internet Connections Needed for Two PCs Playing Same Game Online: Two Separate Connections Required

You need two separate internet connections.

Why

  • Each PC must independently connect to the game's master servers / matchmaking.
  • Each runs its own game client instance, sending/receiving unique packets.
  • Even on same LAN, each needs its own WAN (internet) path unless the game supports LAN-only play (rare for modern online games).

Analogy

Two phones = two SIM cards / data plans. Two PCs = two internet connections (even if shared via one router, each has distinct local IP + NAT mapping).

Exceptions

  • LAN Play: If game supports direct LAN (no internet), one local network suffices (e.g., CS 1.6, StarCraft, Halo CE).
  • Hotspot: One PC shares its connection (ICS / mobile hotspot) → second PC uses it. Still two logical connections over one physical line.

For any modern online game (Steam, Battle.net, EA, Xbox Live): Two internet connections required.
