European Action Replay Codes on North American Games? Generally No—Region Locking Explained

European Action Replay codes usually do NOT work on North American game versions.

Why

  • Region Locking: Games have different memory maps per region (NTSC-U vs PAL).
  • Code Addresses Differ: Same logic, different RAM offsets. A EU code points to wrong address on US game.
  • Executable Differences: Censorship, language, bug fixes shift memory layout.

Rare Exceptions

  • Identical Builds: Some games (esp. early DS/3DS, some PSP) share binary across regions—codes *might* work.
  • Universal Codes: A few codes target dynamic pointers / patterns that survive region diffs. Rare.

What to Do

  • Search for "[Game Name] Action Replay codes USA / NTSC-U".
  • Use GameHacking.org, CodeJunkies (archived), MaxConvert (converts between AR/GS/CB formats).
  • If using flashcart (R4, etc.), use cheat.dat for your region.

Always match code region to game region. Don't assume cross-compatibility.
