Can Original CoD4 and Modern Warfare Remastered Players Play Together? No—Here's Why

If you’re hoping to squad up with friends across Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (2016), you’re out of luck. Cross-play between the two versions is impossible.

Why They’re Incompatible

  • Separate Game Builds: Remastered isn’t a patch—it’s a from-scratch rebuild on a newer engine (IW 7.0 vs. the original IW 3.0). Different codebases, different networking stacks.
  • Distinct Online Infrastructures: Each title connects to its own dedicated servers, matchmaking pools, and backend services. They don’t share lobbies, friend lists, or progression.
  • Original Servers Are Gone: Activision shut down the legacy CoD4 matchmaking servers years ago. Even if you launch the 2007 disc on PS3/360/PC, you’ll find empty lobbies or peer-to-peer matches only.
  • Remastered Has Its Own Ecosystem: MWR launched with Infinite Warfare (Legacy Edition) and later standalone. Its servers are still active but isolated.

What This Means for You

  • On Remastered: You can only match with other MWR owners (PS4, Xbox One, PC).
  • On Original CoD4: Official matchmaking is dead. Community-run servers (PC) or LAN/private matches are the only ways to play multiplayer today.
  • No Workaround: No patches, mods, or third-party tools bridge the gap. The architectures are fundamentally incompatible.

If You Want to Play Together

Everyone needs the same version. For modern online play, that means Modern Warfare Remastered (often bundled with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered or sold separately). For a nostalgia trip on PC, look into community projects like IW4x or Cod4x—but those only work with other modded clients.

Bottom line: two games, two eras, no cross-play. Pick one version and rally your squad there.
