Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth — No LAN Multiplayer (Except BFME II 1.06)

Neither The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth (2004) nor BFME II (2006) supports **local network (LAN) multiplayer** — with one exception.

Multiplayer Options

  • BFME 1: Online only via GameSpy (shut down 2014). No LAN, no direct IP connect. Revived via Revora/GARENA or BFME2 Heaven community patches (custom launchers, tunneling).
  • BFME II: Online (GameSpy, now dead) + **LAN supported** — but only in the **1.06 patch** (final). Requires all players on same patch, same version (no mods). Works via direct IP or LAN lobby.

How to Play LAN in BFME II (1.06)

  1. All players: Install BFME II → Patch to 1.06 (official)
  2. Disable firewall / allow lotrbfme2.exe inbound/outbound
  3. Host: Multiplayer → LAN Game → Create
  4. Clients: Multiplayer → LAN Game → Refresh → Join

Note: BFME I cannot do LAN even with patches. Community uses virtual LAN (Radmin VPN, ZeroTier) + modified launchers to simulate LAN over internet for both games.

If you want LAN RTS in Middle-earth: BFME II 1.06 only. Otherwise, use community online revival.
