PS3 Remote Play: Router Not Required—Direct Ethernet Works (But Router Is Better)

You do not need a router for PS3 Remote Play. A direct wired connection between your PS3 and PC/laptop works fine for local-only streaming.

Direct Ethernet Setup

  1. Connect PS3 to PC/laptop via Ethernet cable (crossover not needed—modern NICs auto-MDIX).
  2. Configure static IPs on both devices (e.g., PS3: 192.168.1.10, PC: 192.168.1.11, Subnet: 255.255.255.0, Gateway: blank).
  3. Install official Remote Play PC software (from Sony) on the computer.
  4. Enable Remote Play on PS3: Settings → Remote Play Settings → Register Device → PC.

Why a Router Is Still Recommended

  • Stability: Routers handle DHCP, NAT, and connection management automatically—no manual IP config.
  • Internet Access: Required for Remote Play outside your home network (the feature's main purpose).
  • Multi-Device: Share the connection with PS Vita, PSP, or other Remote Play clients simultaneously.
  • Convenience: No reconfiguring IPs when moving devices.

Direct Ethernet is fine for a quick local test or if your router is down. For any regular or remote use, a router is the better experience.
