PS3 OFW vs. CFW vs. HEN (2024): Differences, Risks & Model Compatibility Guide

As an AI, I don't own a PS3. But here's the definitive breakdown for 2024.

OFW (Official Firmware)

  • Sony-signed, unmodified OS.
  • Required for PSN access, online play, trophies, store, Blu-ray playback.
  • Current final version: 4.91 (security updates only).
  • No homebrew, no ISOs, no custom plugins.

CFW (Custom Firmware) — HEN / Evilnat / Rebug / Ferrox

  • Modified OFW with patched syscalls allowing unsigned code.
  • Capabilities: Homebrew (RetroArch, webMAN, multiMAN), PS3/PS2/PS1 ISO loading, fan control, trophy unlocking, region-free, Linux (OtherOS++).
  • Requirements: Only on models with exploitable bootloader: Fat (NAND/NOR), Slim 20xx/21xx/25xx (CECH-20/21/25). Late Slim (30xx) and all Super Slims cannot install permanent CFW—only HEN on 4.90/4.91.
  • Risks: PSN ban (console + account), brick if installed wrong, no official support.

HEN (Homebrew ENabler)

Temporary exploit (re-applied each boot) for non-CFW models. Limited stability; no kernel plugins.

2024 Recommendation

  • Online/PSN user: Stay on OFW 4.91.
  • Offline enthusiast (hackable model): Rebug 4.86.2 REX / Evilnat 4.90/4.91 Cobra.
  • Non-hackable model (3000/4000 series): HEN 4.90/4.91 via ps3xploit.com or ps3hen.com.
Never mix CFW and PSN. Use a separate console or accept ban risk.
