PS3 40GB vs 80GB: Storage, BC, Bluetooth

The core difference is **hard drive size**, but the 40GB and 80GB "fat" models (CECHG/H vs CECHK/L/M) have other distinctions:

Feature40GB (CECHG/H)80GB (CECHK/L/M)
HDD40 GB80 GB
PS2 Backward Compatibility❌ None (EE+GS removed)⚠️ **Software Emulation** (CECHK/L only, MotorStorm/MGS4 bundles). CECHM = None.
USB Ports24 (CECHK/L) / 2 (CECHM)
Card Readers❌✅ (CECHK/L) / ❌ (CECHM)
Bluetooth✅ (All PS3s have BT 2.0)✅
Chrome Trim❌✅ (CECHK/L)
Power Draw~140W~140W (similar)

Which to Buy (Used, 2024)

  • Neither. Both are "fat" models (2007–2008) with YLOD risk, failing Blu-ray lasers, dead CMOS batteries.
  • If forced: 80GB CECHK/L (4 USB, card readers, software PS2 BC) > 40GB. But software BC is spotty (~70% compat, glitches).
  • Better: **PS3 Slim (CECH-2000/2100/2500)** — cooler, quieter, reliable, 120/250/320GB. No PS2 BC.
  • Best BC: **Modded Slim/Super Slim** + **PS2 Classics Placeholder** (software emu, better compat, HD, saves states) OR **Launch 60GB (CECHA/B)** if you accept YLOD risk.

Upgrade Path

Any 2.5" SATA HDD (500GB–2TB) works in all PS3s. Format on console. SSDs help load times slightly (SATA I bottleneck).

Buy a Slim. Use PS2 Classics on modded Slim for PS2 games. Fat models are time bombs.
