Playing PS2 Games on PS3: Limited to PS2 Classics Digital

Original PS2 discs do not work on any PS3 model. Sony removed hardware backward compatibility after launch models.

Only Official Way: PS2 Classics (Digital)

• Curated list of ~50 titles (e.g., GTA: San Andreas, God of War, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank).
• Purchased via PlayStation Store (PS3 store closed 2021 — buy on web store, download to PS3).
• Run via software emulation; most run well, some have minor issues.

Unofficial (Not Recommended)

• PS2 emulators on CFW PS3 (e.g., netemu injector) — Complex, low compatibility, legal gray area.

Best Options Today

1. Buy a fat PS2 + FreeMCBoot memory card — Plays 100% of library, $60–$100.
2. PCSX2 on PC — Best upscaling, widescreen patches, save states.
3. PS4/PS5 remasters — Many classics got native ports.

Don't buy a PS3 hoping for disc BC — it doesn't exist.
