How to Perform an Alley-Oop in NBA 2K9 on PS3

NBA 2K9 controls are not officially documented online anymore, but the **alley-oop mechanic has been consistent** across 2K generations. Here is the standard method for PS3 (DualShock 3 / Sixaxis):

Standard Alley-Oop Inputs (2K9 Era)

  1. Call for Alley-Oop: Double-tap **Triangle (Y on Xbox)** — *This is the universal "Lob Pass / Alley-Oop" button in 2K9–2K14 era.*
  2. Timing: Press as the cutter (your player or AI teammate) approaches the paint / takes off.
  3. Finish: The receiver *automatically* attempts the dunk/layup if timed right. You can hold **Square (X)** or **Right Stick Up** (if using Pro Stick) *as the receiver* to force a dunk animation.

Alternative: Self-Alley-Oop (Off the Backboard)

  • Drive to basket → Double-tap **Triangle** (Lob to self) → Hold **Square / Right Stick Up** to catch & dunk.
  • Requires high **Driving Dunk / Vertical** ratings.

If That Doesn't Work

  • Pause → Controller Settings → "Pass Type" / "Alley-Oop" — Verify mapping.
  • Practice Mode (Freestyle): Test Double-Tap Triangle vs. Hold Triangle vs. L1+Triangle (Icon Pass → Alley-Oop).
  • Community Archives: Search "NBA 2K9 PS3 controls PDF" or "Operations Sports 2K9 controls" — community preserved manuals.

Key Tip: Alley-oops in 2K9 rely heavily on the **receiver's "Hands" / "Dunk" ratings** and the **passer's "Pass Accuracy."** Low ratings = dropped passes / missed finishes.
