Playing PS3 720p Games on a 1080i Display

You can play PS3 games that output at 720p on a 1080i display, but the experience comes with compromises.

The Downsides

Upscaling Artifacts: The PS3 (or your TV) must upscale the 720p signal to 1080i. This often introduces blur, scaling artifacts, or a loss of sharpness depending on the scaler quality.

Interlacing Issues: 1080i displays fields alternately (odd/even lines). Fast motion can cause "combing" artifacts or a slight shimmer, which is absent in progressive 720p or 1080p.

Unused Resolution: You are not utilizing the display's full progressive capability, effectively wasting vertical resolution.

The Upside

Compatibility: It is the standard way to connect a PS3 to an older 1080i HDTV. Almost all games will function without configuration issues.

Best Practices

  • TV Settings: Enable "Game Mode" and disable aggressive noise reduction or motion smoothing on the TV to reduce input lag and processing artifacts.
  • PS3 Video Settings: In Settings > Display Settings, try forcing 1080i output. Some games allow internal rendering at 1080i, bypassing the console's scaler.

Better Alternatives

  • Upgrade to 1080p/4K: A progressive-scan display eliminates interlacing and handles 720p upscaling more cleanly.
  • Native 720p Display: If you have a 720p screen, games run at native resolution with no scaling.
  • Newer Consoles (PS4/PS5): These target 1080p or 4K natively, providing a sharper image on modern displays.

Conclusion: While functional, 720p on 1080i is suboptimal. A display upgrade or newer hardware yields significantly better image quality.
