Is PlayStation Move (PS3) Worth Buying in 2024? Honest Breakdown

Depends entirely on your goals. Here's the unvarnished reality.

Pros

  • Unique Motion Library (~50 Games): Sports Champions (the "Wii Sports" killer), Time Crisis: Razing Storm, Killzone 3, Resident Evil 5/6, Heavy Rain, Beat Sketcher, Tumble, Start the Party!, The Fight: Lights Out, Sorcery.
  • Cheap Used: Move Wand + Navigation Controller + PS Eye Camera often $30–$50 total on eBay/Mercari.
  • VR Precursor: Same tracking tech as PS VR (but no headset). Interesting tech history.
  • Local Multiplayer Fun: Party titles shine in groups (Sports Champions archery/gladiator duel 2P).

Cons

  • Small Library: ~50 Move-supported games; many are shovelware (ubisoft party games).
  • Tracking Issues: Lighting-sensitive (needs bright, even light). Drift in long sessions. Camera FOV limited.
  • Dead Ecosystem: No new games since ~2013. PS4/PS5 do not support PS Move (PS VR2 uses new Sense controllers).
  • Better Alternatives Exist: Switch (Joy-Con gyro + IR), Meta Quest 2/3 (6DOF, standalone), PS VR2 (haptics, adaptive triggers, eye tracking).

Verdict

  • Buy If: You own a PS3, want cheap local motion fun (Sports Champions is genuinely great), or collect motion-control history.
  • Skip If: You want modern support, precision tracking, VR, or cross-platform play. Get a Quest 2 ($200-250) or PS VR2 ($550) instead.

Move is a curiosity, not a platform. Fun for an afternoon if you have the hardware. Not an investment.
