Can You Use a Steam Controller on PlayStation 4?

No. The Steam Controller (and Steam Deck) communicates over a proprietary USB/Bluetooth protocol that the PS4 simply doesn’t recognize. There is no official driver, and no reliable third‑party driver exists for the console.

Why It Fails

  • Protocol Mismatch: The PS4 expects standard HID‑over‑Bluetooth (DualShock 4) or USB HID (licensed pads). The Steam Controller speaks Valve’s custom protocol.
  • No Driver Support: The PS4 operating system never loads Steam Controller firmware or button mappings.
  • Input Mapping Issues: Even if you could force a connection, the buttons, gyroscope, and touchpads wouldn’t map correctly to PS4 functions.

Working Alternatives for PS4

  • DualShock 4 / DualSense: Native, full‑feature support.
  • Licensed Third‑Party Pads: Hori, Nacon, Razer Raiju, Victrix—all officially supported.
  • Brook Adapters: USB dongles like the Brook Wingman XB or Super Converter translate Xbox, Switch Pro, or Steam Controller signals for the PS4. They add a bit of latency and may need firmware updates.
  • Remote Play: Stream your PS4 to a PC, Mac, or phone where the Steam Controller works natively.

For native PS4 play, stick with a licensed controller. The Steam Controller is designed for PC and Steam Deck only.
