Re-syncing PS3 Controller: USB Cable Required — Here's the Procedure

You cannot re-sync a DualShock 3 / Sixaxis without a USB cable. The Bluetooth pairing handshake requires a wired data connection to exchange keys.

Re-Sync Procedure

  1. Connect controller to PS3 via USB Mini-B cable (data-capable — charge-only cables won't work).
  2. Press the PS button (center). The 4 LEDs will flash rapidly.
  3. When a single LED stays solid (player number assigned), pairing is complete.
  4. Unplug cable. Controller works wirelessly.

Troubleshooting

  • No LED activity: Try another cable (many are charge-only). Try another USB port (front/back).
  • Flashes then dies: Battery dead. Charge 30 min via PS3/PC/wall (5V/500mA+).
  • Won't hold charge: Replace battery (3.7V 610 mAh Li-ion, ~$8).
  • Multiple controllers: Sync one at a time. Each gets next player number.
  • PC Bluetooth: DS3 works on PC via ScpToolkit / DSHidMini (requires USB for initial pair, then Bluetooth).

Why No Wireless-Only Pairing?

Sony designed the DS3 to pair only when physically tethered — a security measure to prevent unauthorized controllers in tournaments / shared spaces. The PS4/PS5 DualSense/DualShock 4 support wireless pairing via Settings → Devices → Bluetooth Devices.
