PS3 Universal Voltage? No—Region Specific (100-120V or 220-240V). Check Label Before Plugging In

The PS3 does not have universal voltage. It's manufactured for specific regions:

  • NTSC (NA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, etc.): 100–120 V, 60 Hz
  • PAL (Europe, Australia, UK, Asia, etc.): 220–240 V, 50 Hz

Why It Matters

  • Plugging a 120 V unit into 230 V → immediate damage (pop, smoke, dead PSU).
  • Plugging 230 V unit into 120 V → may not power on, or run unstable.

Solutions for Travel/Import

  • Step-Down/Up Transformer: Heavy, bulky, must handle PS3's ~200–380 W peak. Not recommended for regular use.
  • Buy Region-Correct Model: Safest, cheapest long-term.
  • PS3 Slim / Super Slim: Still region-locked PSU. No universal model.

Exception

PS3 Power Supply is internal. Some early 60 GB (CECHA/B) have a universal-input PSU (100–240 V) but the console's region lock (Blu-ray/DVD) remains. Check label near AC inlet.

Always verify voltage on the rating label before plugging in.
