Communicating with Friends on PS3: Features and Current Limitations

Historically, PS3 offered:

• PSN Messages: Text/voice messages via XMB.
• Friends List: Status, join game, invite.
• Party Chat (Cross-Game Voice): Up to 8 players (firmware 3.0+).
• In-Game Voice/Chat: Per-title support.
• Video Chat: With PlayStation Eye.

Critical Update (2021+)

Sony has discontinued most PS3 online services.

• PS Store purchases no longer possible on console (web only).
• Many game servers shut down (online multiplayer dead).
• Party Chat / Messaging may be unstable or non-functional.
• Trophy sync still works.

Recommendation

For reliable voice chat and active communities, use PS4/PS5, Discord (mobile/PC), or smartphone apps while gaming on PS3.
