PS3 Has Sound but No Picture: Troubleshooting Guide

This is a common issue with several potential causes. Work through these steps in order:

1. Cable & Connection Checks (Most Likely)

  • Reseat HDMI: Unplug both ends firmly. Try a known-good HDMI cable (v1.4+ for 1080p).
  • TV Input: Confirm TV is set to the correct HDMI port (HDMI 1, 2, etc.).
  • Try Alternate Output: If you have the AV Multi-out cable (composite/component), test it. If composite works, the HDMI port or handshake is the issue.

2. Video Output Reset (Safe Mode)

  1. Turn PS3 off (standby red light).
  2. Hold Power button ~7 seconds until you hear two beeps (second beep ~5 sec after first).
  3. System boots into Safe Mode at 480p/576p.
  4. Select "Reset Video Output Settings" (Option 2). Follow prompts to reconfigure for your TV.

3. Display Settings Mismatch

  • If you moved the PS3 to a new TV, it may be outputting a resolution/refresh rate the new display doesn't support (e.g., 1080p on a 720p-only panel, or 24Hz cinema mode). Safe Mode reset fixes this.
  • Disable Deep Color and 24Hz in Settings → Display → Video Output if issues persist.

4. Hardware Faults

  • Overheating (YLOD precursor): Clean vents, replace thermal paste (advanced), ensure airflow. Video chip (RSX) solder fractures cause artifacting/no video.
  • HDMI Port Damage: Bent pins inside console or TV port. Inspect with flashlight.
  • Hard Drive Failure: Corrupt OS assets. Try booting without HDD (remove caddy) → if video returns, HDD is culprit.

5. Software Corruption

  • Safe Mode → "Restore File System" (Option 3) → "Rebuild Database" (Option 4).
  • Last resort: "Restore PS3 System" (Option 5) — wipes all data. Backup saves to USB first (Game → Saved Data Utility → Copy).

When to Seek Repair

If Safe Mode reset + known-good cable + alternate TV fails, the RSX GPU or HDMI encoder IC likely needs reflow/reball (professional repair) or the console is uneconomical to fix.
