Trading Old PS3 for New PS3: Not Possible (Discontinued)

You cannot trade a PS3 for a new PS3 at any official retailer. Sony discontinued the PS3 in 2017 (Japan) / 2016 (West). No new units exist in retail channels.

What You Can Do Instead

Sell Your PS3 (Best Cash Return)

  • eBay / Swappa / Mercari / Facebook Marketplace: $50–$150 depending on model (Fat/Slim/Super Slim), capacity, condition, box, controller, games included.
  • Backward Compatible Fat (CECHA/B/C/E) — Premium ($150–300+).

Trade for Store Credit (Lower Value, Instant)

  • GameStop / Best Buy / Local Retro Shops: $15–$40 credit. Promos sometimes boost toward PS4/PS5.
  • Amazon Trade-In: Gift card. Must match exact SKU.

Upgrade Path: PS4 / PS5

  • PS4 / PS4 Pro: Used $150–250. Plays 99% PS4 library. No PS3 disc backward compat (streaming via PS Now only, service merged into PS Plus Premium).
  • PS5: $499 (Disc) / $399 (Digital). Plays PS4 discs. No native PS3 disc support. PS3 games only via PS Plus Premium cloud streaming (requires 15+ Mbps, latency varies).

Before Parting With PS3

  1. Backup Saves: Settings → System Settings → Backup Utility → USB drive (FAT32). Copies saves, trophies (synced separately), themes.
  2. Deactivate Console: Settings → Account Management → Activate as Primary → Deactivate. Frees your account for new console.
  3. Remove Disc / Clean: Increases resale value.

If you want to play PS3 games today: Keep the PS3 (best compatibility), buy a used Fat/BC model, or subscribe to PS Plus Premium for streaming (selected titles only).
