Connecting PS3 to the Internet: Wired & Wireless Setup

Wired (Ethernet) — Most Stable, Lowest Latency

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your router/modem to the LAN port on the back of the PS3.
  2. On PS3: Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Settings → Wired Connection.
  3. Select Easy (auto-detect) or Custom (manual IP/DNS/MTU/Proxy).
  4. Run Test Connection. Should show "Succeeded" for IP, Internet, and PSN.

Wireless (Wi-Fi) — Convenient, All Models Except Launch 20GB

  1. Ensure your PS3 has Wi-Fi (all models except the original 20GB launch unit).
  2. Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Settings → Wireless.
  3. Select Scan → choose your SSID.
  4. Enter WPA2/WPA3 password (PS3 supports up to WPA2-AES; may struggle with WPA3-only routers—set router to WPA2/WPA3 mixed).
  5. Run Test Connection.

Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Restart everything: PS3 → Router → Modem (unplug 30 sec each).
  • Update PS3 System Software: Settings → System Update (via disc/USB if no net).
  • DNS Fix: Set Primary DNS 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare) in Custom network setup.
  • Check PSN Status: status.playstation.com.
  • ISP Issues: If other devices fail, contact your provider.

Wired is strongly recommended for downloads, online gaming, and Remote Play. Steps may vary slightly by firmware version (final is 4.90).
