Finding PS3 Cables for a Standard TV: HDMI Is All You Need

Connecting a PS3 to any modern TV is straightforward: use an HDMI cable. The PS3's "AV Multi Out" port also supports component/composite, but HDMI delivers 1080p, digital audio, and HDCP handshake for protected content (Blu-ray, Netflix).

Step-by-Step

  1. Locate HDMI OUT on the PS3 rear (single port, labeled).
  2. Find an HDMI IN on your TV (usually 2–4 ports, labeled HDMI 1, HDMI 2...).
  3. Use a High-Speed HDMI cable (certified for 1080p/60 Hz, 4K/30 Hz). Standard HDMI works for 480i/720p only.
  4. Connect: PS3 HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN.
  5. On TV remote, press Input/Source → select the matching HDMI port.
  6. Power on PS3. XMB should appear. If not: Settings → Display Settings → HDMI → Automatic.

Troubleshooting

  • No Signal: Reseat both ends. Try another HDMI port. Test cable on another device.
  • Black Screen / Flicker: HDCP handshake fail. Power cycle both (unplug 30s). Try a shorter/higher-quality cable.
  • Audio Only: Settings → Sound Settings → Audio Output → HDMI → Auto / Linear PCM 5.1 / 7.1.
  • Resolution Mismatch: Hold PS3 power button 5s (second beep) to reset video output to 480p, then reconfigure.

Legacy Options (If TV Lacks HDMI)

  • Component (YPbPr): 5 RCA cables (Red/Green/Blue video + Red/White audio). Supports 1080i. Requires PS3 Component AV Cable (Sony official or quality third-party).
  • Composite (Yellow/Red/White): 480i only. Low quality. Last resort.

HDMI is cheap ($5–15), universal, and future-proof. Skip adapters—direct cable is best.
