Playing Burned PS1 Games on PS3: Not Possible—Legal Options Instead

You cannot burn PS1 discs (CD-Rs) and play them on a PS3. The PS3's optical drive and firmware are designed for a different disc structure (Blu-ray / DVD / PS3 game discs) and do not recognize burned PS1 CD-Rs as valid software.

Why It Doesn't Work

  • Disc Format & Architecture: PS1 games use a specific CD-ROM XA format with wobble groove authentication. The PS3's laser and firmware expect PS3/PS2/Blu-ray/DVD structures. Burned CDs lack the pressed-disc wobble groove.
  • PSN Only: Sony's official path for PS1 on PS3 is the PlayStation Store's "PS1 Classics" line—digital downloads wrapped in a PS3-compatible emulator wrapper.
  • Legal: Burning copyrighted PS1 games (even if you own the original) violates DMCA §1201 (anti-circumvention) in the US and similar laws elsewhere.

Legal Ways to Play PS1 on PS3

  1. Buy PS1 Classics from PlayStation Store: Dozens of titles available (FFVII, MGS, Crash, Spyro, Twisted Metal, etc.). Run via official emulator.
  2. PC/Other Device + Legal Emulator: Use DuckStation, Beetle PSX, or RetroArch with ISOs you've dumped from your own discs. Stream to PS3 via DLNA or play directly on PC.

Not all PS1 games are on the Store. Performance varies by title. But burning discs? Won't work.
