Can PS3 Games Play on PS4?

PS3 Games on PS4: Backward Compatibility

No. PS4 is not backward compatible with PS3 discs or digital PS3 purchases.

Why

Architecture: PS3 = Cell (PowerPC + 7 SPEs). PS4 = x86-64 (Jaguar). Radically different ISA; software emulation of Cell on Jaguar is too slow.
No Hardware BC: PS4 lacks PS3 silicon (unlike early PS3s with PS2 EE+GS).

PS3 Discs on PS4/PS5

Disc acts only as license verification for streaming (PS Plus Premium) – you still stream; disc doesn't run locally.

Recommendation

For specific titles, buy the remaster. For broad library, PS Plus Premium streaming (requires 15+ Mbps, wired preferred). Keep a PS3 for physical library, PS1/PS2 BC, and homebrew.
