PS4 Backward Compatibility With PS2/PS3 Games: No Native Support—Official Access Methods

No. PS4 cannot play PS2 or PS3 discs natively. Architecture gap (x86 vs MIPS/Cell) prevents it.

Official Access Methods

• PlayStation Plus Premium (Cloud): Streams ~450 PS2/PS3 titles. Requires 15+ Mbps, 720p–1080p, adds latency. Library rotates.
• PS2 Classics (PS Store): ~50 titles recompiled for PS4 (trophies, 1080p). Buy individually ($9.99–$14.99).
• Remasters/Remakes: Hundreds of PS2/PS3 games rebuilt for PS4/PS5 (e.g., Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted Collection, MGS HD, FF X/X-2, Persona 5 Royal).
• Cross-Buy (PS3→PS4): Few titles (Flower, Journey, Sound Shapes) — buy on PS3, get PS4 version free.

What Doesn't Work

• Inserting PS2/PS3 disc → "Cannot start" error.
• PS Now (old service) — merged into Premium 2022.

Best Experience

• PS2: PCSX2 (PC) or PS2 Slim + FreeMCBoot + OPL.
• PS3: RPCS3 (PC) — near-perfect for most titles.
• PS4: Play PS4/PS5 games natively.

Keep the old consoles; they're the only true way.
