Why Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Skipped the PlayStation 2
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) launched on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC—not PS2. Four key reasons:
Hardware Chasm: The PS2 (2000, 299 MHz EE + 147 MHz GS) was vastly weaker than the PS3 (3.2 GHz Cell + RSX). CoD4's lighting, physics, particle effects, and map scale were impossible on PS2.
Generational Focus: Activision/Infinity Ward wanted to showcase next-gen tech. A PS2 port would dilute the "modern warfare" visual identity.
Declining ROI: By 2007, PS2 sales had plummeted; development cost for a downscaled port wouldn't recoup.
Resource Allocation: Porting to PS2's unique architecture (VU programming) would divert engineers from the lead SKUs.
CoD4 was built for the seventh generation; the PS2 simply couldn't run it.
