Setting Up Wireless Internet on PlayStation 3

All PS3 models (Fat, Slim, Super Slim) have built-in Wi-Fi (802.11b/g). No USB adapter needed unless internal fails.

Step-by-Step (XMB)

  1. Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Settings → OK (disconnects current).
  2. Easy (Auto-detect) or Custom (Manual). Choose Wireless.
  3. Scan → Select your SSID.
  4. Security: WPA-PSK (AES) / WPA2-PSK (AES) → Enter password. WEP not recommended; WPA3 not supported.
  5. Address Settings: Easy (DHCP) → Auto DNS / MTU / Proxy / UPnP.
  6. Test Connection. Success = "Internet Connection: Successful".

If Built-In Wi-Fi Fails (Fat PS3 Common)

  • USB Wi-Fi Adapter: Must be PS3-compatible (rare). Most don't work. Try Edimax EW-7711UAn or ASUS WL-167g (RTL8187L/RTL8192CU chipsets). Plug in → Same steps above.
  • Wired (Ethernet): Always works. Cat5e to router. Best for downloads/online.
  • Powerline: AV2 adapters over electrical wiring. Near-wired stability.

Troubleshooting

  • 8001000A / 80710102: DNS/MTU. Set DNS Manual: Primary 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare). MTU 1473 or 1500.
  • WPA2-AES Only: Router set to WPA2-AES (CCMP), not TKIP or Mixed.
  • Channel: 1, 6, or 11 (2.4 GHz). Avoid Auto.
  • Rebuild Database: Safe Mode → Option 5 (fixes corrupted network config).
