PS3 Backward Compatibility: Only Original 'Fat' Models Play PS2 Discs Natively

You don't need a specific PS3 model to play PS2 games—but only the original "Fat" models play PS2 discs directly.

Model Breakdown

• Original PS3 (Fat) — 2006–2009: Models CECHA (60GB), CECHB (20GB), CECHC (60GB), CECHE (80GB). Hardware (CECHA/B) or Software (CECHC/E) PS2 emulation. Play PS2 discs natively.
• PS3 Slim (2009–2012) & Super Slim (2012–2017): NO PS2 disc compatibility. Cannot read PS2 DVDs.

For Slim/Super Slim Owners

Buy PS2 Classics from the PlayStation Store (digital ports running via software emulation). Selection is limited (~50 titles).

So: Fat PS3 = PS2 discs work. Slim/Super Slim = PS2 Classics only.
